Best DIY Landscape Lighting Kits (2026): Honest Comparison by Budget and Yard Size
Short answer: pick a kit by yard size and what you want to light. A few trees and shrubs in a front yard need about 5 fixtures and a 75W transformer. A full front yard with a walkway needs about 8 fixtures and a 150W transformer. Large front and back yards with tall trees need 11 or more fixtures and a 300W transformer. Whatever you buy, size the transformer so your fixtures use no more than 80% of its rating.

All three kits include a Wire Stripper, ground stakes, IP67 fixtures and X Style modular fixtures: if an LED module ever needs replacing, you swap the module or beam lens instead of the whole fixture.

Five things to check before you buy any kit
- Transformer headroom. Add up the fixture watts and keep the total at or below 80% of the transformer rating. Our transformer size guide shows how.
- Connector quality. Weak or non-waterproof connections are a common reason lights fail. Read our wire connector guide and look at what the kit actually includes.
- Can you replace the light source? Some fixtures let you swap the LED module or bulb. Others mean replacing the whole fixture.
- What is in the box. Cable, connectors, stakes and a Wire Stripper. A kit that leaves these out costs more once you shop for them.
- Room to expand. Most people add lights after seeing the first night. A 75W transformer supports 60W of fixtures at 80% load, a 150W supports 120W and a 300W supports 240W.
Brass or alloy?
Solid brass is a better choice near salt air or heavy irrigation, and it is what VOLT uses. QDot X Style fixtures are alloy metal with an IP67 rating and cost less for a similar fixture count, and the LED module is replaceable. If you want full brass, buy brass. If you want a complete kit with a Smart Switch at a lower price, a QDot kit is built for that.
Who QDot is for, and who it is not for
- A good fit: DIY homeowners who want a complete 12V kit, phone ON/OFF and schedules, a lower price, and fixtures with a replaceable LED module.
- Not the best fit: you want solid brass fixtures, or you want controls beyond phone ON/OFF, schedules and remote control.
Warranty
QDot fixture bodies have a lifetime warranty and LED modules have a 5-year warranty. Fixtures are IP67 waterproof rated. See the warranty page for the full terms.

Frequently asked questions
Which QDot kit is right for my yard?
The Starter Kit ($299, 5 spotlights, 75W transformer) fits a short path, entry or a few trees and shrubs. The Pro Kit ($549, 6 spotlights and 2 path lights, 150W transformer) fits a front yard. The Ultimate Kit ($699, 6 5W spotlights, 3 10W spotlights and 2 path lights, 300W transformer) fits front and back yards with tall trees. Every kit leaves room to add more fixtures later.
Is QDot brass?

Lifetime warranty on the fixture body and 5 years on the LED module. Fixtures are IP67 rated.
Do I need an electrician to install a kit?
No. QDot kits are 12V low voltage and plug into a standard outdoor GFCI outlet. Read our step-by-step guide to installing DIY low-voltage landscape lighting.
